Cremation Urn Size FAQ

Cremation Urn Size FAQ

Will a 185 cubic inch urn be large enough for my loved one?

Yes, in most cases. Our 185 cubic inch urns have served families beautifully for years. While you may read online that you need “1 cubic inch per pound of body weight,” this guideline refers to pre cremation weight and often overestimates the actual space needed.

Cremated remains typically measure between 150-200 cubic inches for most adults, regardless of their body weight. This is because the cremation process reduces everything except bone matter, which is what comprises the ashes.

Why do some websites say I need a 200+ cubic inch urn?

The “200 cubic inch standard” has become widely repeated online, often accompanied by the “1 pound = 1 cubic inch” rule. However, this is a very rough estimate that tends to overstate the actual volume needed. The cremation industry uses this as a general guideline to ensure urns aren’t too small, but it doesn’t mean smaller urns are inadequate.

 In reality:

Women’s cremated remains average 4-6 pounds (approximately 120-180 cubic inches). Men’s cremated remains average 6-8 pounds (approximately 180-240 cubic inches). The actual volume depends on bone density and height, not body weight.

What actually determines the volume of cremated remains?

The volume of ashes depends primarily on:

Bone structure and density – not body weight

Height – taller individuals generally have more bone mass

Age – bone density can vary with age

Gender – men typically have denser bones than women

Body weight, muscle mass, and fat have no impact on the final volume, as these tissues are completely consumed during cremation.

How do I know if I need a larger urn?

Consider a larger urn if:

Your loved one was exceptionally tall (over 6’2″)

You’ve already received the remains and measured them at over 185 cubic inches You plan to include mementos or keepsakes with the ashes

Multiple family members wish to add memorial items

What if the urn I choose isn’t large enough?

At Ephraim Pottery, we stand behind our products. If you find that our standard 185 cubic inch urn doesn’t accommodate your needs:

Contact us immediately – we’re here to help.

We can discuss custom sizing options (4-10 week crafting time depending on size) We’ll work with you to find a solution that honors your loved one.

Can you make custom-sized urns?

Absolutely. While our standard urns meet most families’ needs, we understand that every situation is unique. We offer custom-sized urns with a 4-10 week artisan crafting time, depending on the size difference. Significantly larger urns require extended drying and firing times to ensure structural integrity and prevent cracking. Our artisans will provide a more specific timeline based on your requirements.

How can I measure cremated remains I’ve already received?

If you’ve already received the ashes from the crematorium:

They’re likely in a temporary plastic container.

Measure the length × width × height of the container in inches.

Multiply these numbers together for the cubic inch volume.

Most temporary containers are about 8.5″ × 6.5″ × 4.5″ (approximately 220 cubic inches when full).

Why are many Ephraim Pottery urns 185 cubic inches?

We’ve crafted memorial urns for many years, and this size has consistently served families well. Our urns are designed to be both functionally appropriate and aesthetically proportioned. The 185 cubic inch capacity provides adequate space while maintaining the elegant silhouette and artisan quality that makes our pottery special.

Do you offer urns in other sizes?

Currently, most of our large lidded urns are crafted at 185 cubic inches. We also offer:

Custom sizing (4-10 week lead time depending on size requirements)

Smaller keepsake urns (5-60 cubic inches) for families dividing ashes

We’re always evaluating our offerings based on family needs.
