You Are In Good Company: Ephraim Enthusiast Laurie Nickels Shares Her Arts & Crafts Journey

We’re always inspired by the stories our collectors share with us. Today, we’re delighted to introduce you to Laurie Nickels, a passionate Ephraim enthusiast since 2012, who’s become a friend of the studio. Laurie’s journey with our pottery beautifully illustrates the connection between artisan-made pieces and the homes they enhance.

Discovering Ephraim

Laurie’s love for Ephraim Pottery began with a deep appreciation for nature and craftsmanship. In her own words:
“What first drew me to Ephraim Pottery was the organic nature, subject matter and beautiful colors/glazes of the pottery. I am an avid animal lover (birds and bats), as well as a flower garden junkie! I love how each piece is hand-made and the piece you receive is NEVER like a piece someone else would get!”

A Growing Passion

Over the years, Laurie’s collection has evolved alongside our designs:
“Over the years, the creativity has just bloomed into a wonderful array of colors and subjects! Just when I thought I’ve seen it all, you guys come up with another great piece(s), that is just begging for me to call it mine!”

Cherished Memories

While Laurie finds it difficult to choose a favorite piece, one experience stands out:
“I did attend a ‘glaze’ class years ago at the Wisconsin location where you could glaze a bat vase, and the instructors walked you through how to do it. I’d have to say, that (at one time) was my favorite because I actually was ‘hands on’ with its creation.”

The Art of Collecting

When adding to her collection, Laurie focuses on what speaks to her:
“When I’m looking for a piece to add to my collection it’s really first based upon subject matter. Once that’s determined, I look at the colors/glaze options. I’m a huge fan of greens, blues and purples (for my everyday collection) and I can certainly find something in those colors!”

Living with Art

For Laurie, Ephraim pottery has become an integral part of her home:
“Ephraim pottery has become my main décor. It’s in every room of the house, and the collection has grown so much that I have enough to switch-out from everyday pottery to Halloween/Fall, Christmas and Spring/Summer. I find myself looking at the pieces frequently, as I don’t really see the same thing twice. The craftsmanship, glazing, etc. is so beautifully executed, there’s just nothing like it. I love that I have such beautiful pieces that not only enhance my living space every day, but make me smile.”

Sharing the Joy

Laurie’s enthusiasm for Ephraim Pottery is contagious. Here’s what she tells friends about collecting:
“I would tell them that this is not like every other pottery around, and you are making an investment that will last you for years to come. The vast array of subject matter, glazes, and being handmade (literally) make this pottery ‘stand tall’ against all others. You will fall in love with it, and all it takes is purchasing your first piece!”

We’re grateful to Laurie for sharing her story and hope it resonates with your own experiences. Whether you’re a long-time collector or new to Ephraim, we’re honored to be part of your home and life.
