Visual rhythm creates a ceramic melody in the Canon Vase. Here, five hand-carved tulips encircle a graceful, understated form. The piece is glazed in three different tonal color schemes–Chestnut, Crystalline Purple, and Cranberry and coordinates with designs from our musically-inspired Rhythm Line. The pieces in our Rhythm Line forego traditional sculptural elements in favor of streamlined forms, artistic abstractions, and incised, patterned black linework reminiscent of a musical staff. We created the Centerpiece Ginkgo Bowl to be an upsized version of our popular, recently retired Ginkgo Branch Vase. This piece, with its arboreal motif and earthy colors, has a timeless appeal. The design wraps around the top to form the rim, while branches rise above creating a sculptural piece. The Craftsman Tile Wall Shelf is made from quarter-sawn white oak. Ephraim artist, John Raymond, makes components of each shelf from the same board to ensure the best grain match and applies a stain and seals the shelf with a satin finish to heighten the medullary rays of the quarter-sawn grain. John brands each piece with Ephraim Studio’s logo. The shelf accommodates our 4" x 4" art tiles (Acorn Tile, shown) sold separately. In the 1990s, with the rise of the cubicle and mass-produced goods, Kevin Hicks revered a time when people made objects by hand. Hicks, a skilled potter with a business degree, imagined a modern artisan guild where collaboration could thrive. Through this collaboration, handmade products would show the hand of the maker and display a reverence for the natural world. This ethos is a throwback to the Arts and Crafts Movement of the early 20th century. However, it seems as relevant today as it did 100 years ago. It is reflected in our Arts and Crafts pottery.
The Arts and Crafts era’s organic forms and solid design inspire our work. Therefore, we seek to make pottery similar in style to ceramic studios from this era. They include Grueby Faience Pottery, Marblehead Pottery, Mackintosh, Roseville, Rookwood, and Weller Pottery. These pieces are intended to be perfect decorative arts and crafts pottery accents for Bungalows, American Foursquares, as well as Mid-century homes.
Just like antique Arts and Crafts pottery, our aesthetic above all is one where the hand of the maker is evident. Each piece can have its own style, but the pieces are unified by the process. It includes hand-throwing, sculpting, and finishing with our in-house designed glazes. We purposely lean away from technologies that remove the artists’ hands from the work. These include slip casting, using molds, ram pressing, and relying on computer-aided transfer methods.
