This piece pays homage to the ground-breaking artistry of the historic Grueby Faience Company. This vase, along with other pieces of Grueby-revival designs in our collection, will satisfy the aesthetic requirements of even the most die-hard Arts and Crafts purist.

The Amaryllis Twists Vase reinterprets the twisting buds and elegant form of the long-retired Ephraim Pottery Perennial Vase. These buds represent an about-to-bloom amaryllis, the beloved flower that brightens our homes during long, monochromatic winters. Handmade to order. No two pieces of the same design look exactly alike, that’s part of the magic of handmade ceramics. Because we lean away from technologies like molds, templates, and casts, each piece is wholly unique. Minor variations in size, decoration, color and finish are intrinsic to our pottery. Please expect and embrace the variation inherent in our process.

To celebrate our studio’s 25th anniversary, we wanted to reimagine a piece from the very beginning. In 1996, the original Apple Leaf Vase was a major foundational design. Ephraim’s founder and primary potter, Kevin Hicks, remembers the Apple Leaf Vase as the first piece on which the studio successfully rendered leaves in a style that looked lively and natural. These hard-won early techniques laid the groundwork for so much of what has become the ‘Ephraim style'. With the Apple Leaf Redux Vase we have built on the form and sculpting technique of the original and added our signature buds, providing a pop of color. This cabinet-sized vase is offered in our full line of classic Arts & Crafts colors. Handmade to order. No two pieces of the same design look exactly alike, that’s part of the magic of handmade ceramics. The Athena Vase reinterprets one of our early pieces, the Greek Vase, on a smaller scale. A traditional Arts and Crafts leaf, bud, and teardrop motif encircles a timeless form, creating a pleasing symmetry. This piece is named for Athena, Greek goddess of inspiration and the arts. Artist Anniversary Series
We proudly feature John's contributions to our studio with a special piece that he designed for the occasion - the Craftsman Bookshelf. John was inspired to make a small bookshelf in the Craftsman style by old-fashioned niches and pin-up shelves that he has seen at antique shows and in his local church. Years ago, his mother asked him to refinish her church's antique Danish offering box. He admired the craftsmanship so much that it stuck with him and has culminated in this Craftsman Bookshelf. Display your pottery or books or both on his versatile piece – made with love and John's unflinchingly high standards! It is our tradition at Ephraim for artists to commemorate a milestone at the pottery with a special design. This year John Raymond celebrates this momentous milestone. Artist Anniversary Series pieces are available for only one year. John’s Craftsman Bookshelf will retire on August 31st, 2022. Artist anniversaries signify much more to us than merely “loyal years” of coming to work. Artists at the studio exert a major influence on the ever-evolving art that we make. The aesthetic sensibilities and honed techniques of each of our members collectively define Ephraim’s art. It is a beautiful – and novel – model for an art pottery. This model means that Ephraim’s body of work would have been far different without John's passion for the Arts and Crafts style and his dedication to authenticity. Individual sensibilities make our art eclectic and yet the way these ideas filter through others, make our pieces cohesively Ephraim.   Ephraim artist, John Raymond, makes components of each shelf from the same board to ensure the best grain match and applies a stain and seals the shelf with a satin finish to heighten the medullary rays of the quarter-sawn grain. John brands each piece with Ephraim Studio’s logo.  This piece is perfect for showcasing your favorite Ephraim Pottery vase. Learn more about our process.

Twenty-five years ago, with the rise of the cubicle and mass-produced goods, Kevin Hicks revered a time when people made objects by hand. Hicks, a skilled potter with a business degree, imagined a modern artisan guild where collaboration could thrive. Through this collaboration, handmade products would show the hand of the maker and display a reverence for the natural world. This ethos is a throwback to the Arts and Crafts Movement of the early 20th century. However, it seems as relevant today as it did 100 years ago. It is reflected in our Arts and Crafts pottery.

The Arts and Crafts era’s organic forms and solid design inspire our work. Therefore, we seek to make pottery similar in style to ceramic studios from this era. They include Grueby Faience Pottery, Marblehead Pottery, Mackintosh, Roseville, Rookwood, and Weller Pottery. These pieces are intended to be perfect decorative arts and crafts pottery accents for Bungalows, American Foursquares, as well as Mid-century homes.

Just like antique Arts and Crafts pottery, our aesthetic above all is one where the hand of the maker is evident. Each piece can have its own style, but the pieces are unified by the process. It includes hand-throwing, sculpting, and finishing with our in-house designed glazes. We purposely lean away from technologies that remove the artists’ hands from the work. These include slip casting, using molds, ram pressing, and relying on computer-aided transfer methods.
