Since opening the Ephraim Pottery West Coast Gallery in 2012, we have become more familiar with the variety of California’s natural beauty, and local customers encouraged us to create a piece featuring their state flower, the California Poppy. Here, golden-edged orange poppies flutter in high relief on the side of a slim bottle glazed in aquamarine tones which evoke the Pacific Ocean. Handmade to order. No two pieces of the same design look exactly alike, that’s part of the magic of handmade ceramics. Because we lean away from technologies like molds, templates, and casts, each piece is wholly unique. Minor variations in size, decoration, color and finish are intrinsic to our pottery. In this follow-up design to our popular, retired Pacific Poppies Tile, golden-edged orange poppies dot the shoreline along the Pacific coast. Just like the original tile, this sweet three-inch version is offered in Leaf Green and Indigo. Handmade to order. The California quail - the Golden State bird - is known for its hardiness and adaptability. With its plumed head, graphic feathers, and round body, it proved the perfect subject for exploration of an earthy color palette on this tile. Handmade to order. The queen is the most powerful chess piece, so we knew she required a tour-de-force to represent her in our chess-themed collection. On this piece, a queen bee perches on a crown of Queen Anne’s lace. Graceful and understated, the shape of this vase perfectly suits the qualities of a queen, and allows both glaze variations—warm and cool—to play a starring role on the Queen Bee Vase. This elegant poppy design adds to our growing Rhythm Line. The pieces in this collection forego traditional sculptural elements in favor of streamlined forms, artistic abstractions, and incised, patterned black linework reminiscent of a musical staff. The Regency Poppy Vase channels graceful 1920’s Deco style to represent the state flower of California—the California Poppy. In this piece strong form and design take their inspiration from Marblehead Pottery - a highly regarded American pottery shop from the 1920’s and 1930’s. Our California customers encouraged us to feature their state flower, the California Poppy and now we turn to this motif often as a source of inspiration. When several Ephraim artists travelled to Costa Rica, they were struck by the beautiful drape and bright blue color of these blossoms, inspiring this hand-sculpted vessel. The skyflower is widely cultivated by Central and South American gardeners for its floral clusters that bloom to attract butterflies and hummingbirds year round. Handmade to order. Some members of the magnolia family can trace their ancient origins back 95 million years—before bees were the bees knees—and to this day are pollinated instead by beetles. This vase celebrates the magnificent blossoms of the great magnolia tree. Dramatic sculpting and a cascading glaze application of green mingling with vibrant pinks and cranberry make this a stunning statement piece.

The studio revisits our popular Craftsman Rose motif in this tall, elegant vase. Bold architecture and abstract, stylized roses anchor the top of the vase.
