The Birch Vase invites our gaze to a window which perfectly frames a birch tree amidst a rolling landscape. The architectural detail on the form evokes the rounded timbers of the historic Greene & Greene architecture, enhancing the illusion that we are inside looking out. The Bixby Bridge is a landmark just outside Big Sur that spans the steep mountains overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Visual rhythm creates a ceramic melody in the Canon Vase. Here, five hand-carved tulips encircle a graceful, understated form. The piece is glazed in three different tonal color schemes–Chestnut, Crystalline Purple, and Cranberry and coordinates with designs from our musically-inspired Rhythm Line. The pieces in our Rhythm Line forego traditional sculptural elements in favor of streamlined forms, artistic abstractions, and incised, patterned black linework reminiscent of a musical staff. Artist Anniversary Series
Influenced by Marblehead Pottery, Frank Lloyd Wright, Greene and Greene, and many more, this piece combines intricate, precise linework and a flowing, organic illustration of a chickadee amongst the blooming cherry blossoms. Standing out against the rich chestnut glaze, the pink accents of the cherry blossoms create a stunning contrast that encapsulates the beauty of the natural world. Created by Matthew Drees as a tribute to his years at Ephraim, the Chickadee Songbird Vase is truly indicative of his unending experimentation and search for inspiration. It is our tradition at Ephraim for artists to commemorate a milestone at the pottery with a special design. This year Matthew Drees celebrates this momentous milestone. Artist Anniversary Series pieces are available for only one year. Matthew's Chickadee Songbird Vase will retire on July 30th, 2025. Artist anniversaries signify much more to us than merely “loyal years” of coming to work. Artists at the studio exert a major influence on the ever-evolving art that we make. The aesthetic sensibilities and honed techniques of each of our members collectively define Ephraim’s art. It is a beautiful – and novel – model for an art pottery. This model means that Ephraim’s body of work would have been far different without Matthew's steady hand and honed glaze application skills. Individual sensibilities make our art eclectic and yet the way these ideas filter through others, make our pieces cohesively Ephraim. -

The tritone is a musical interval composed of three adjacent whole tones. Ephraim artists play with a variation on this theme by creating three precisely, hand-rendered flower buds that encircle a small, soft form. Early last spring, Ephraim artist Matthew Drees spent an afternoon sketching as he hiked through the thawing Wisconsin landscape. Taking design cues from Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Drees created this wonderful vase from those sketches.
