WelcomeTheNight_E_rocks-800

With cooler weather and darker skies, the bats begin their swooping ritual to welcome the night in the early evening this time of year. These hypnotic creatures, descending from the trees and arching across the dusky October sky inspired our newest Reserve Edition, “Welcome the Night.” Three bats gather at the rim on this low bowl form. Dramatic crackle glaze and delicate sculpting on the bats make this a moody and impactful piece of pottery.

Here in Wisconsin we have seven species of bats and we are fortunate to have a stable bat population. Our studio is in a rural area where we see bats frequently and recognize the positive role that they play in our ecosystem. Occasionally a bat makes its way into the pottery and we try to gently guide them back outside. It is a real treat to observe these incredible creatures up close.

“Look up, and you see things flying

Between the day and the night;

Swallows with spools of dark thread sewing the shadows together.”
